The celebration of World Mission Sunday gives us a chance to reflect on the importance of mission for the life of the Church. It helps us to reflect on missions worldwide, where specific missionary challenges are different from ours. Mission Sunday is indeed a gift to the Church. This day reminds us that we are all committed to carrying on the mission of Christ, however, different our situations may be. This year Mission Sunday calls us to reflect anew on the mission at the heart of the Christian faith. We send our brothers and sisters to bear witness to our faith in Christ and to proclaim the gospel. The Church’s mission according to Pope Francis is not a spread of religious ideology, much less to propose a lofty ethical teaching. Through the mission of the church, Jesus Christ himself continues to evangelize and act; her mission makes present in history the favourable time of salvation. Mission reminds the Church that she is not an end unto herself, but a humble instrument and mediation of the Kingdom. Pope Francis in this year’s World Mission Sunday message wrote: “the Pontifical Mission Societies are a precious means of awakening in every Christian community a desire to reach beyond its own confines and security in order to proclaim the Gospel to all. World Mission Sunday promoted by the Society for the Propagation of the Faith is a good opportunity for enabling the missionary heart of the Christian communities to join in prayer, testimony of life and communion of goods, in responding to the vast and pressing needs of evangelization`` (World Mission Sunday Message 2017). Thank you People of God for all the sacrifices you are making for the spread of the Gospel and the support of missionaries around the world. The help and support you have given to the universal solidarity fund will ever remain as a symbol of this love of God. Please keep supporting Pope Francis through Pontifical Mission Societies, in carrying out the mission of Christ entrusted to the church. Fr. Alexander Osei, C.S.Sp.
