DISCIPLESHIP

Parishioner to Disciple
As potential disciples, we have been called and then formed. All well and good, but it can’t be an end in itself.
To use an analogy, if you are trained to be a carpenter and then never built anything, never pick up a hammer or a saw or a piece of wood, then one might suggest to you haven’t used your time well. The purpose of discipleship is mission, beyond the doors of the Church, out into the world.

Discipleship and Perseverance
If you’ve ever used a well, you know that you can’t constantly be drawing water; eventually, the well will run dry. So, on a regular basis you have to allow the well to be replenished, for water to seep back in to fill it.
The same is true of our spiritual life: If we are working diligently for the Kingdom of God, we need to rest up from time to time. Even Jesus withdrew from time to time to pray and to be renewed. This is good practice for all disciples.

Quality of Mercy
We’re quick to judge others, to point out how they don’t measure up, forgetting our own failings.
In the pages of Scripture, we are constantly reminded of God’s mercy and forgiveness. Again and again, God shows an abundance of patience and mercy to the people of Israel, even though they often forget their covenant with God.

The Gospel of Community
Through Christ, we are drawn into community not for selfish reasons, not for some political advantage or personal gain, but to deepen our relationship with God and with one another.
